Biography

Ghada Amer (Cairo, Egypt, 1963) is an internationally recognized artist with a wide range of works that include not only painting but also bronze sculptures, clay ceramics, engravings, installations, videos, and outdoor gardens. She is represented by major galleries in New York, London, Korea, and South Africa. Her works are coveted by private collectors and are part of important permanent collections in museums around the world (including, for example, the Centre Pompidou, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Barjeel Art Foundation, the Brooklyn Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Guggenheim Museum, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Arab Museum of Modern Art, and the Fond National d’art contemporain).

Ghada Amer constantly allows herself to explore the dichotomies of a troubled world and confronts the language of hostility and finality with unstable narratives of longing and love. Through her work, Amer overturns traditional notions of cultural identity, abstraction, and religious fundamentalism.
