Esra Gülmen
Artist
Biography
Esra Gülmen is a Turkish artist based in Berlin, whose work explores the contradictions of contemporary life through a playful and ironic lens. Drawing on her background in visual culture and design, her practice encompasses painting, sculpture, installation, and public engagement, addressing themes of identity, emotion, and social critique through a bold visual language marked by irony.
Gülmen blurs the boundaries between sculpture and painting, often using text, image, and form interchangeably to communicate her ideas. Her work rejects traditional notions of artistic "sublimity" in favor of bluntness, humor, and emotional honesty. By challenging idealized aesthetics, symbolic over-interpretation, and the need for fixed meaning, she invites viewers to reconsider the role and purpose of art, privileging the real, the raw, and the intimate over the polished or perfect.
Her work has been exhibited in important museums, both in solo and group exhibitions, at institutions such as OK Linz, Fuhrwerkswaage Mountainview Gallery (Cologne), and Bundeskunsthalle (Bonn), in showcases like I WAS I AM, Uncensorable Euphoria, For Everyone! Redesigning Democracy, and Interactions. She also participated in Radical Feminine at Kunsthaus Blaue Butter (Gmunden).
Among her public art commissions are installations at the Alt-Tempelhof subway station in Berlin (2024), Potsdamer Platz (2022), and in Kobe, Japan (2023).
She holds a degree in Interior Design from the Faculty of Fine Arts, having studied in Istanbul and Genoa.
