Convergences / Divergences

Matches/Divergences

Suro Collection

Several contemporary artists have passed through the Cerámica Suro factory in Tlaquepaque (founded in 1951), leaving behind flashes of creativity and desire materialized. Based on traditional ceramic techniques, these pieces emerge from coordinates of singular subjectivities. However, gathered in dialogue, they emanate a subtle halo of connectivity and interweaving. Convergences/Divergences invites us to discover a visual language developed from a collectivity of conceptually heterogeneous artists, who transform a supposed abyss into a mythical landscape.

After more than thirty years of collecting, producing, and collaborating with artists, it is impossible to separate the relationship of art from the collection itself, with its production in the factory. Marcela Preciado and José Noé Suro have been actively collecting since the early nineties, when they began inviting artists to produce works at Cerámica Suro. Over more than three decades, they have been shaping a collection of contemporary art that has left its mark on museums and collections in multiple countries. Sharing their collection with the public and the city of Guadalajara has always been a goal for the Suro family. Thus, Plataforma is established as a permanent venue for the collection, where different interpretations of it will be presented, as well as commissioned projects from various artists who have a long-standing relationship with Cerámica Suro. The first exhibition, Matches/Divergences, includes a group of artists who have worked for years at Cerámica Suro: Alejandra Laviada, Cristóbal Gracia, Erika Verzutti, Gelitin, Ghada Amer, Héctor Zámora, and Olaf Breuning.
